The "Hardwick" Ground cherries grow on a weedy 1-2 foot high plant, with between ten and thirty "cherries" per plant. The "Hardwick" ground cherry fruits, resembling a miniature green tomato or round pepper between 3/4" and 1," are shrouded within leafy husks hanging from the bottoms of the branches, in the manner of the "Japanese Lantern" ornamental cultivar. "Hardwick" ground cherries have a distinct citrusy/fruity taste with a more vegetable kind of back-taste that is very distinct, and is not at all like that of the related Tomatillo. It is fun to watch the faces of people tasting Hardwick ground cherries for the first time, at first they don't know how it tastes, then they don't like it, then they do. It is so unlike other fruits or vegetables that you can't at first classify it. (Source: Fred Wiseman)
